Rice varieties grown in Sri Lankan villages

Use this diagram to explain how a frequency table can be built up (by hand) using tallies.

Click on each value on the left to draw a line on the left and add one to the frequency table. (After clicking 5 values, you can click Complete table to fill in the table completely.)

Select Data matrix from the pop-up menu at the top to show that the categorical variable may be one of many variables in a data matrix. (Again, click rows to add one to the frequency table.)

As part of a survey of rice producers in Sri Lanka, 36 farmers were randomly selected from 4 villages. Each sampled farmer was asked about the variety of rice that he used.

The variables in the full data set are listed below, but the exercise focuses on the rice type.
