Power transformations and skewness

A group of transformations called power transformations is often used to reduce skewness in X or Y. Moving down the table reduces any long tail in the right of the distribution and spaces out the low values further. (Note where the logarithmic transformation fits into the table.)

Power transformations and curvature

Power transformations are also commonly used to linearise nonlinear relationships. They are a generalisation of the logarithmic transformations described earlier.

Identify the effect of transformations

In this exercise, you should identify how three transformations of X and Y alter the scatterplot of these two variables. Drag the lower three scatterplots to match them to the transformations.

Repeat with a few different scatterplots.
