Strength measurements from 41 male students
Samples from a distribution such as a normal distribution can be used to help assess whether skewness, clusters or outliers in a real data set could have appeared by chance.
Select random samples (from a normal distn with the same mean and sd as the actual strength data).
The random samples rarely appear as skew as the real data, giving strong evidence that MVIS has a skew distribution.
In an ergonomic study involving a group of 41 male students from the University of Hong Kong, each student was asked to exert maximum upward force on a horizontal bar which was close to floor level, with his feet 400mm away from the bar. The force, averaged over a 5-second period, is called the 'maximum voluntary isometric strength' (MVIS) and is recorded in kilograms.
