Shape of a box plot
A box plot summarises a fair amount of information about the shape of a distribution. In particular, it clearly shows symmetry and skewness.
The following exercise shows stacked dot plots for four data sets on the left. You should match them up to the box plots on the right by dragging the box plots up and down. (Note that outliers are not separately displayed in the box plots — they would make the exercise too easy!)
Harder exercise
The next exercise is similar, but there are smaller differences between the shapes of the distributions.
Again drag the diagrams to match ones corresponding to the same data.
Repeat with a few different data sets.
