Rice survey in 4 Sri Lankan villages

Use this diagram to show how a frequency table can be built up (by hand) using tallies.

Click on all the values from Sabey to complete the first column of the contingency table. Repeat with the other villages. (After adding values from 5 farmers manually, you can click Complete table to fill in the table.)

Stress that each farm contributes exactly one to a single cell of the contingency table.

Select Data matrix from the pop-up menu at the top to show that the 'group' variable and the other categorical variable may be two of many variables in a data matrix. (Again, click rows to add one to the appropriate cell of the table.)

As part of a survey of rice producers in Sri Lanka, 36 farmers were randomly selected from 4 villages. Each sampled farmer was asked about the variety of rice that he used.

The variables in the full data set are listed below, but the exercise focuses on the rice type and village.
