Blood type and race in Hawaii

Use this diagram to explain that when group sizes differ, it is easier to compare proportions within groups than the raw frequencies.

Select Propn within Ethnic group to display all within-group proportions. Click any row to see standardisation process.

There are big differences in the proportions with blood groups B and AB in the different racial groups.

Select Percent within Ethnic group to show the proportions as percentages. Without the leading zeros, it is easier to scan down columns to quickly spot unusual values.

In a study of racial differences in blood types, blood specimens from the Blood Bank of Hawaii were classified by blood type (O, A, B and AB) and by ethnic group (Hawaiian, Hawaiian-white, Hawaiian-Chinese and White).
