Sums of squares
The analysis of data from randomised block experiments is closely related to that from completely randomised experiments. Both split the total sum of squared differences between response value and the overall mean into components.
Finally, note that the sums of squares above are all summed over all values in the data set. For example, the summation in the between-blocks sum of squares sums over all values, not just over the different blocks.

We first illustrate the sums of squares between blocks and between treatments for this data set.
We now illustrate how the residual sum of squares can be interpreted.
It is not easy to prove, but the residual sum of squares is identical to the residual sum of squares in the anova table on the previous page after removing block effects.
