In the first dot plot, there is probably something 'wrong' about the outlier — it could be an error or there might be some different characteristics of the individual from which the measurement was made (e.g. one male with the others being female).

Use the second dot plot to explain that an 'outlier' may be simply the extreme value in a skew distribution.

In the third dot plot, the highest value is less unusual and the dot plot itself is more jagged. A good data detective would check the value but it may be OK.
