Household survey

Use the diagram to introduce the idea of multi-level data. Multi-level data consists of some measurements from each of a collection of individuals such as households, businesses or trees. This top-level data can be displayed in a data matrix. However within each top-level 'individual' there are several sub-individuals such as

and other measurements are made at the sub-individual level. The sub-individual measurements can be displayed in their own data matrix that is linked to the top-level data matrix.

Click on any household or individual to see the linkage between the two tables.

The data below are typical of information that is collected in surveys of consumer purchases and attitudes. A sample of houses is selected and information is collected from all individuals in these houses. For illustrative purposes, we have only shown data from 18 households and have only shown two variables at household level and three at person level.
