Body fat and BMI of AIS athletes
Use this diagram to explain that a 3rd categorical variable, Z, (or equivalently groups) can be represented on a scatterplot of Y vs X. Use the pop-up menu to display the sex of the athletes and their sport in this way.
The diagram is a bit muddled when sport is displayed since there are many sports and their distributions overlap. However there is a clear difference between the relationship for male and female athletes — male athletes have lower average Body fat than female athletes with the same BMI. Using the sex of the athletes in addition to their BMI should result in more accurate predictions of Body fat.
