Picturing a distribution from its mean and standard deviation

Data sets are often summarised by their mean and standard deviation. Although these two values do not capture details of the shape of the distribution (e.g. skewness), they do give information about the centre and spread of the values.

In the following exercises, you should draw graphical display that could be consistent with the mean and standard deviation that are specified in the question.

Dot plot

In the following dot plot, drag the crosses to form a dot plot whose mean and standard deviation are close to the values in the question.

Histogram (optional)

The next exercise is similar, but you must select an appropriate axis to display the data using the pop-up menu. Then drag the tops of the histogram bars to show a histogram whose mean and standard deviation are close to the values in the question.
