Student degrees
Use this diagram to show how a frequency table can be built up (by hand) using tallies.
Click on all the values for the students getting BBS degrees to complete the first column of the contingency table. Repeat with the other degrees. (After adding values from 5 students manually, you can click Complete table to fill in the table.)
Stress that each student contributes exactly one to a single cell of the contingency table.
Select Data matrix from the pop-up menu at the top to show that the 'group' variable and the other categorical variable may be two of many variables in a data matrix. (Again, click rows to add one to the appropriate cell of the table.)
These data are artificial but are supposed to be part of a survey of students who are graduating at a university. 36 students were randomly selected from 4 degree programmes. The class of degree obtained by each student was recorded.
The variables in the full data set are listed below, but the exercise focuses on the degree type and class.
