Student degrees at a university

Use this diagram to explain how a frequency table can be built up (by hand) using tallies.

Click on each value on the left to draw a line on the left and add one to the frequency table. (After clicking 5 values, you can click Complete table to fill in the table completely.)

Select Data matrix from the pop-up menu at the top to show that the categorical variable may be one of many variables in a data matrix. (Again, click rows to add one to the frequency table.)

These data are artificial but are supposed to be part of a survey of students who are graduating at a university. 36 students were randomly selected from 4 degree programmes. The class of degree obtained by each student was recorded.

The variables in the full data set are listed below, but the exercise focuses on the degree class.
