College admission
In the proportional Venn diagram,
The area of the rectangle for any combination of gender, programme and admission is proportional to the number of applicants in that combination.
Click any blue rectangle to read off the proportions of males and females getting admission in specific degree programmes. P(admission) is higher for females than males in each programme.
Select Group by Gender from the pop-up menu to rearrange the shapes of the rectangles. The overall proportion of females admitted is less than the overall proportion for males.
The relationship reverses because most males applied to the Business college, with its higher admission rates, increasing the marginal proportion of males admitted.
