Household survey in Malawi

Use the diagram to introduce the idea of multi-level data. Multi-level data consists of some measurements from each of a collection of individuals such as households, businesses or trees. This top-level data can be displayed in a data matrix. However within each top-level 'individual' there are several sub-individuals such as

and other measurements are made at the sub-individual level. The sub-individual measurements can be displayed in their own data matrix that is linked to the top-level data matrix.

The data below are based on an activity diary study that was carried out in Malawi. Individuals within households kept a record of activities carried out at 4 different times of the day. For illustrative purposes, we have only shown data from 18 households and have not shown information from the activity records.

Note that the households have also been given a unique number and each individual has a 'household ID' variable that links it to its household.
