Confounding

A treatment term in an analysis of variance is said to be confounded if it is estimated in a stratum other than the bottom stratum of the design; specifically, the treatment term is said to be confounded with the block term that corresponds to the stratum. For example, in the split-plot design in Section 6.5 of the Genstat for Windows Introductory Course, variety is confounded with blocks.wplots.
