Default license file locations were changed on 1st December 2010 to simplify some aspects regarding security settings in Windows 7. The locations used previously will still be recognised as valid for backward-compatibility, therefore existing installations will not require modification when installing a software update. The new locations were introduced in the following software versions:

Default file locations
The software tries to install the key to the first location (Application Data). If that fails it will try the alternative location (User Application Data). Manual installation can be to either, but the first is preferred as it allows the software to be used by any user logged in to the computer. The alternative location is within the user’s personal file space and may not be accessible by other users, depending on the version of Windows, security settings and access rights.

Old default locations
For reference, we include details of the old license file locations. These were used prior to the dates and software versions specified above. These locations are still valid in new versions of the software but new licenses are no longer automatically installed there.

Note that the standard Windows folders Program Files and Common Files may have different names according to your language settings. The VSN International and Licenses folders may have been created during installation, but if not you can create them yourself.
