Navigating Using Shortcut Keys

Genstat spreadsheets use many of the standard Windows navigation methods to move between cells such as Enter, Page Up and tabbing. If you have selected one or more cells you can expand the selection using shortcut keys, rather than dragging with the mouse.

Navigating cells in a spreadsheet

Pressing Enter moves the cursor down one cell by default. If you prefer to move across a row, rather than down a column, you can set this preference as follows:

  1. From the menu select Tools | Spreadsheet Options | then click the Columns tab.
  2. Select Enter key moves cursor across columns then click OK.

The following shortcut key combinations let you speed up your navigation by ‘jumping’ to the start or end of a row or and column.

To perform action Press keys
Move left one cell Left arrow
Move right one cell Right arrow
Move up one cell Up arrow
Move down one cell Down arrow
Move up one page (for spreadsheets that extend outside the visible window) Page Up
Move down one page (for spreadsheets that extend outside the visible window) Page Down
Move to beginning of a row Home
Move to end of a row End
Move to top of a column Ctrl+Home
Move to end of a column Ctrl+End
Move right one cell. If at end of row, move to start of next row Tab
Move down one cell. If at end of column, move to start of next column Enter
Move left one cell. If at start of row, move to end of previous row Shift+Tab
Move up one cell. If at start of column, move to end of previous column Shift+Enter
Move left to first cell that contains a value (i.e. not a missing value). If there are no values, move to beginning of row Ctrl+Left arrow
Move right to first cell that contains a value (i.e. not a missing value). If there are no values, move to end of row Ctrl+Right arrow
Move up to first cell that contains a value (i.e. not a missing value). If there are no values, move to top of column Ctrl+Up arrow
Move down to first cell that contains a value (i.e. not a missing value). If there are no values, move to bottom of column Ctrl+Down arrow

Moving a cell selection

The following commands let you select cell ranges. To clear the cell selection press Esc. To delete a selection press Ctrl+Shift+D.

Move selection left one column Shift+Left arrow
Move selection right one column Shift+Right arrow
Extend the selection up one row (click repeatedly to keep extending) Shift+Up arrow
Extend the selection down one row (click repeatedly to keep extending) Shift+Down arrow
Move selection up one page (for spreadsheets that extend outside the visible window) Shift+Page Up
Move selection down one page (for spreadsheets that extend outside the visible window Shift+Page Down
Move selection to start of row Shift+Home
Move selection to end of row Shift+End
Move selection to start of column Ctrl+Shift+Home
Move selection to end of column Ctrl+Shift+End
Extend selection to first column Ctrl+Shift+Left arrow
Extend selection to last column Ctrl+Shift+Right arrow
Extend selection to first row Ctrl+Shift+Up arrow
Extend selection to last row Ctrl+Shift+Down arrow
