Mahalanobis distance

is the distance between two points in multidimensional space. It is calculated as

d_ij = (x_i – x_j)′ W^-1 (x_i – x_j)

where x_i and x_j are the coefficients of the points, and W is the covariance matrix of the population from which the points are taken.
