Sum of squares

is the sum of the squared values of a variable. For example the total corrected sum of squares is the sum of the values after subtracting (i.e. correcting for) their mean, the sum of squares of a treatment term in an analysis of variance is the sum of the squares of its effects, each square multiplied by the replication of the effect, and so on.
