Use this menu to change a standard Genstat spreadsheet to a Trials file. The factors that specify the plots, rows, columns, replicates and treatments must be defined, as well as the column types.
Plot numbers column
This gives the name of the column indexing the units in the trial, and is Plot by default. It is will be converted to a units variate.
Rows column
Provides the column indexing the rows in the trial. This will be renamed to Row. If it is not a factor, it will be converted to one.
Columns column
Provides the column indexing the columns in the trial. This will be renamed to Col. If it is not a factor, it will be converted to one.
Replicates column
Provides the column indexing the replicates in the trial. If it is not a factor, it will be converted to one.
Treatments column
Provides the column indexing the treatments in the trial. If it is not a factor, it will be converted to one.
Trial Id
A trial code used to identify the trial. This would normally have letters to code the series, species, location and year for the trial. It should be unique as it is used as the default filename for the trial.
Description
A one line description of the trial.
Starting date
The date the trial was started/sown. This should be entered in the format d-mmm-yy, e.g. 12-Feb-23.
Plot size
The area of a plot in square metres.
Sowing rate
The sowing rate of seeds.
5 seasons
The trial will use 5 seasons if ticked. Otherwise it will have 4 seasons. The seasons can be edited later using the Define Seasons dialog.
Protect design columns
If this is selected, the plots, rows, columns, replicates and treatments columns will be protected so they cannot be changed.
Replicates in rows
If this is ticked, the replicates are across the trial, filling complete rows until the next replicate is reached. Otherwise the replicates are down the trial, filling complete columns until the next replicate is reached.
Serpentine order
If this is ticked, the plots are numbered in a serpentine fashion, with row or columns numbered in alternating directions. Otherwise they are always in the same direction.
Across rows
If this is ticked, the plots are numbered across rows. Otherwise they are numbered down columns.
Setup column types
Click this button to open the Edit Column Types dialog to allow the column types to be defined. These can be edited later on using the Trials | Edit | Column types menu. The column types can be used to define columns whose repeated measures are to be summarized over seasons, or to define columns that are to be calculated automatically from other column types. For example, dry matter yield could be calculated automatically by the product of green yield and dry matter percentage.
Data columns
This gives a list of the variate columns in the spreadsheet. The columns should have their dates in their descriptions. Otherwise these will need to be entered using the Edit Column Information dialog.
Edit info of selected columns
This opens the Edit Column Information dialog for each selected column in the Data columns list, so that the correct column types and dates can be provided for each column manually.
Changed selected to type
Click this button to change the column types of the selected items in the Data columns list to the type shown in the adjacent list of column types. The Setup column types button can be used to change the column types from the defaults.
