Spreadsheet New Menu

Select menu: Spread | New

To create a new spreadsheet, from the menu select Spread | New. You can then choose whether to open a spreadsheet loaded from Genstat data structures or the Clipboard, or a blank spreadsheet for typing in new data.

Create

This creates a blank spreadsheet which may be used for entering data from the keyboard. You can specify the type and size of the spreadsheet with the New Spreadsheet dialog. New Vector spreadsheets are created with variate columns which can be converted to text or factor columns using the Column Attributes/Format command or by typing text into an empty column, in which case the column type changes to text.

Data In Genstat

This loads data from Genstat into a new spreadsheet, using the Load Spreadsheet dialog which lets you define the spreadsheet type and specify the data structures to load into it. The data structures loaded will define the number of rows and columns in the spreadsheet.

From Clipboard

This loads data from the Clipboard into a new spreadsheet. If the first line contains only text values these will be used as the column names, otherwise default column names will be generated (C1,C2,…). Each row of data from the Clipboard will be loaded into a new row of the spreadsheet; values may be tab, comma, or space delimited, and blank rows on the Clipboard will create blank rows on the spreadsheet. The number of columns in the spreadsheet is defined by the row with the most values. Currently, only numeric data can be loaded in this way. The New Spreadsheet from Clipboard dialog controls how the data on the Clipboard is handled.

ODBC Data Query

Create a spreadsheet from an ODBC Data Source using the ODBC Data Query – Select Data dialog which lets you query an ODBC database.

This loads data from a DDE server into a new spreadsheet, using the Create Spreadsheet Using a DDE Link dialog which lets you specify the DDE data (Topic and Item) to load into it.

Excel Import Wizard

This loads data from an Excel file into a new spreadsheet, using the Excel import wizard which guides you through selecting the data from an Excel file in a step by step process.

Spreadsheets can be opened from other file formats using the File | Open menu item. The file formats supported can be found in Import or Export Data in Other Formats.

From URL

This opens the Open file from URL dialog which loads data from a URL (Universal Resource Locator) which allows you to download files from the internet or remote hosts on a network. If the URL does not define a valid spreadsheet, then an error message will be displayed.

Book from Selected Sheets

This menu opens the Collect Sheets into a New Book dialog, which provides a list of the open spreadsheets that can be collected into a new book.

Tabbed-table from Genstat

This menu item opens the Create tabbed-table dialog. This can be used to display a table in a book with multiple pages where one of the classifying factors of the table is used to index the tabs in the book. This lets you view a slice of the table for each level of the factor used to index the tabs.

Append Multiple files

This opens the Append Multiple Files dialog that will take data from a list of files, and append them into a single spreadsheet, with a factor indexing which file each data row came from.
